29/11/2007 - facebook,a gold mine?

Facebook is the second largest social network on the web, behind only MySpace in terms of traffic. Primarily focused on high school to college students, Facebook has been gaining market share, and more significantly a supportive user base. Since their launch in February 2004, they’ve been able to obtain over 8 million users in the U.S. alone and expand worldwide to 7 other English-speaking countries, with more to follow. A growing phenomenon, let’s discover Facebook.

In 2007, the website has the largest number of registered users among college-focused sites, with 55 million active members (including non-collegiate members) worldwide, with membership expected to surpass 60 million users by the end of the year. From September 2006 to September 2007 the site's traffic ranking increased from 60th to 7th, according to Alexa. It is the number one site for photos in the United States, ahead of public sites such as Flickr, with over 60 million photos uploaded weekly.

The name of the site refers to the paper facebooks depicting members of the campus community that some U.S. colleges and preparatory schools give to incoming students, faculty, and staff as a way to get to know other people on campus.

In September 2007, the website was so successful that Microsoft approached Facebook, proposing an investment in return for a 5% stake in the company. Microsoft would pay an estimated 300 to 500 million dollars for the share. Other companies such as Google had also expressed interest in buying a portion of Facebook. On October 24th, 2007, Microsoft announced that it had bought a 1.6% share of Facebook for $246 million, which values the site at around $15 billion.

Microsoft realized that the company could make a lot of money thanks to Facebook.

Facebook is a massively successful social networking service that grew to prominence in virtually no time. It’s not hard to see why: its features and tools are highly appealing, and Facebook users are extremely well networked in real life. Rumors of an acquisition continue to circulate, with some estimates putting the price in the billions of dollars. In the short term, however, Facebook plans to go it alone, continuing to build out one of the world’s most successful social networks.

15/11/2007 - what does make you famous on the internet?

First, the word famous is a latin word-fama-which means "reputation".

Indeed, there is no link between fame and talent. That reputation used to be based , most of the time,on a social background.

Indeed, in order to become famous, you needed to meet and be apreciated but other famous people and especially journalists.

Nowadays ,thanks to the Internet, anyone can make you famous .

Indeed, internet users create your reputation.

Plus you can measure a reputation through comments on blog for exemples.

If you upload a video on you tube, you know how many times your video has been watched.

If you have talent but don't know any famous person, you can become famous thanks to websites like my space.

Indeed, many artits use that site in order to show their talent.

It seams fair since your reputation is based on the opinion of internet users instead of on the opinion of stars or jouralists.

However, you can't totally control your reputation.

Indeed, anyone can upload an embarassing video of you on you tube, write a nasty comment on your blog or a fake piece of information in order to ruin your reputation.

For exemple, during elections, some internet users can upload embarassing videos of the candidates in orde to change their reputation. For exemple, this a video of Sarkosy(drunk!):

http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance/search/sarkosy+bourr%C3%A9/video/x2g9e9_sarko-bourre-au-g8_politics

To me, there are not enough rules on the Internet.

The government should do something even if controling what happens on the internet is almost impossible...

8/11/2007 - we are smaller than me

We are smaller than me is a good illustration of a famous phrase:united we stand divided we fall.

Indeed, "we are smarter than me" is a book written by a community of business men. This project is the joint effort of Pearson Educational Publishing, Wharton, MIT, and Shared Insights. The goal was to form a community that would write a book about how communities could change and enhance the way that companies do business. It's not a traditional book but a book written thanks to a website through blogs, podcasts,a wiki etc

I think this is pretty cool. Open source books are nothing new - there are many examples of blogs turning into books. One of my favorites is Joel on Software, a popular tech blog that became a book. There are many more examples. Publishing in installments is also nothing new - The Three Musketeers, published 1844, was originally published in serial form in the French magazine Le Siècle.

But using a wiki is a much more rare approach, and I think is starting to hint on what can happen when you combine book publishing with the power of social software. Imagine if every book you read was full of links and dynamic interludes. Or if books were more of a full media experience, with photos and videos to accompany them. Sort of a movie/audio book/novel mashup.May be this is what the future books are going to look like.

11/10/2007 - did the web 2.0 influence the French presidential elections?

The web and the blogs have, as never ever before, played a significant role in the French presidential elections.

This has forever impacted the political strategies in this country.

The web is very popular with the French : one out of 2 french citizens is connected to the web and France has 4 million blogs.

Worldwide nothing new.

As local political lifes goes on - in Italy, in Israel, in China and in many countries - the local experiences can benefit people and candidates everywhere.

In the US, the presidential election of 2008 has already seen a number of initiatives on both sides : Barack Obama, John Edwards, John Mc Cain, and some severe attacks on Hilary Clinton.

I have heard that some candidates have created virtual worlds on Second Life.

In France, political parties have realized the importance of the web when France said NO to the European Consitution, in 2005 : as Jean Philippe Clement put it : “the media said yes, and the web said no”.

So here is how the web 2.0 strategies were put in play during this french presidential campaign.

A few facts about the web in the campaign.

- The 4 leading candidates in France operated their websites with real success : Sarkozy, Royal , Bayrou , and Le Pen.
- Each of their parties put up mash-ups from Google Maps to allow supporters to register directly to share a political action or join a group.
- All french leading magazines and dailies opened weblogs for writers and popular individuals.
- IFOP conducted a survey in February : 47% of internet surfers are looking for political information on the web. This is particularly true of people above 35 years old, not of the younger ones.
- 21% of polled french citizens trust blogs as a source of information (Source Ipsos).
- The traffic of the political weblogs increased by 250% according to FranceInfo (May 5th, 2007).
- Out of the top 6 most influencial french blogs, 5 relate directly (Versac, Bayrou, embruns) or comment occasionnally (Loic le Meur, Point Blog) politics and the presidential campaign.
- The webcasts distributed through the leading video platform are a good benchmark.

Segolene’s message has been seen 44 000 times.

The “promotional” video of Sarkozy and the 21 children taken hostage, 300 000 times.

How did the 2 leading candidates built their web strategy?

Segolene Royal engaged in a viral strategy, stimulating the discussion while Sarkozy was focusing on his own site, creating his own web TV - NSTV, putting up a lot of content and focusing on his program.
The web budget of Segolene Royal amounted to € 1.2 million.

Her team put together a map of the supporting blogs.

She had 40 moderators sorting out the messages and ideas and pull from it major ideas and messages.

Nonetheless, her campaign could not fill in the gaps left by her own program.

Sarkozy launched his web strategy quite early in 2006.

Sarkozy had a supporter’s club very active in the campaign.

Loic Le Meur, the french most influencial blogger regardless of the last ranking, participated unofficially but actively in that campaign, advising Sarkozy, suggesting video interviews, inviting him to speak at “Le Web 3.0″, taking stances on his own blog and congratulating him for his election 1 hour before the results were published.

In the end, the web was smartly used by both candidates, but one used it as a technique, while the other leveraged it around his program.

The one with the strongest focus won and his web strategy breathed that focus.

But the web did not change history, nor did it replace the power of television.

11/10/2007 - exercice

Currently, I work for a 65 employees company that sales a sofware for kids. It is located in Paris in the 15th arrondisement in a street called Rue Maubert.

The company receives subsidies to hire interns. That is how I found my job as a salesman even if I used to be marketing officer.

We sell a series of products including Youngsoft softwares. We have many charges associated with marketing. Our advertising campaing in the subway is one of the most expensive. Our public relations department also has a very large budget. We make our own ads with our report team, and we publish our book.

Until now,our quarterly results have been good this year. Our market is very interesting right now, and that is why we make profit.

We want to export our products to Tahiti because we think overseas customers would be interested in buying them.

To sum up, thanks to our positive deontology and interesting market position, we will have a rosy future.

3/10/2007 - a student blog in our school

A few weeks ago, some students of the school decided to create a student blog for our university, celsa.

Indeed, a communication school has to give a good image of its students, courses, associations.

Apparently, the head of the school, véronique Richard, had always wanted the student to create a website.

However, since the reputation of the school is at strike, she is gonna be extremely demanding.

Indeed, this website has to be a mirror of the school for future students, companies, universities.

That's why the team-creative writers, webmasters, art directors-is working hard and would like other students to write articles, visit the website, join the team.

As a creative writer, I have the chance to realize how difficult and interesting it is to be a member of that team.

So please if u believe in generosity, join us!

27/09/2007 - welcome to neverland

welcome to the virtual world of new technologies.

Indeed, legends, fairytales and myths are not oldfashioned.

It's a current issue:

we need to escape when we spend hours in front of the screen of the computer as we need to when we read a story.

we are just human beings.

We hate facing reality and need some excitment-work,love,drugs,games,internet,music...

Internet is a life substitute for people.

the web 2.0 make us feel powerful and active:thanks to some websites,

we can pretend we are journalists, politicians, writers and we need to believe we are...

27/09/2007 - does the web 2.0 really exist?

Web 2.0 is the new version of the world wide web.

Thanks to that new generation, web users are more activ than ever.

Collaborative websites like wikipedia are good illustrations of that culture phenomenon.

However, some "websceptics" claim that the web 2.0 is a myth created by some companies to developp one to one marketing and advertising on the web.

To me, even if  there is a business model on the web , generosity does exist through blogs, download, free dictionnaries.

We are getting used to ads on the web .

That's why we can stop paying attention and take profit of all the oppotunities of the web.

Web 2.0 is a reality.

That's why it's not perfect.

But that doesn't mean that it's a myth.

27/09/2007 - wiki, symbol of a collaborative website

A wiki is a medium which can be edited by anyone.

Thanks to a wiki, u can create links between the pages.

A wiki is a good illustration of collaborative websites which emerge everyday.

A "normal" encyclopedia is published every 10 years whereas a wki can be update at any time by anyone.

That's why there are so many definitions! It's a cultural revolution.

however, even if some texts are censored, some mistakes can be published, some subjective comments-about politics for exemple.

To me, the exemple of wkipedia is an incredible step forward and a symbol of generosity...but it doesn't mean we should stop readind a "real" dictionnary!
